Introducing Stacey Duvall...

Well, as you probably all know by now - I'm Stacey.
I should also mention I am a control freak - hence the recruiting and organizing of the group that I did.
I'm a 36yr old (or at least I will be in a couple of weeks) wife and mother.
I have 2 boys (ages 5 and 13) and 4 step-children [1boy-15, 1girl-13 and twin girls-10].
In August I will have been married for 3yrs.
I work at the local electric company here in Austin, Texas.

I have NO formal art experience or training - to be honest I stumbled upon a blog over a year ago and I thought to myself "I can draw" lets see what I can do. I bought and read a lot of books about drawing and painting and seem to have a natural talent that I am developing. I have dabbled in a number of creative arenas - sewing, scrapbooking, card making, yard art, drawing, watercolor and acrylic. I am still learning each of them everyday. I have found that being creative can be both a blessing and a curse but I do so love to see images come to life on a piece of paper.

  1. Stacey, I'm here! I didn't realize that Outlook was screwing with my email acct & not delivering all messaged!
Should I do an intro post to the blog?

2 boys & 4 steps? Wow! That is a lot to handle! No formal training huh? I love folks that happen upon their talent! I have formal training but honestly I don't feel it contributed too drastically to what I do (maybe I should of paid better attention? lol) & I was lucky to grow up with a father that was not only talented but extremely disciplined when it came to practicing one's craft. He used to say that "more is caught than taught" & I really feel like that is how I learned.

Anyhow, I'm excited to get this going & seems like a great group of artist! Let's do it!

    Talk soon,
    Matt

  2. nice! I too have no "formal" training besides basic general art classes from first grade through freshman year of high school. I too am still learning, and currently working to "define" my illustration style.

I used to draw a lot but then when I became older it got lost as all of the new responsibilities came along. About a year ago I thought to myself, I have a natural artistic and creative ability, and if I do not practice and improve, I am simply wasting it. Thus here I am trying to grow and build my illustration skills.

Maybe you can recommend some books? :)

  3. Stacey. Thanks for doing all the organization for this group. I'm impressed that you were able to do all this, while still taking care of your children! :-) Great job so far.

  5. Eeks - I would say yes - do a new intro post to the blog. That way everyone can read about you and comment.

Honestly I am the only one in my family with any 'real' talent. Growing up my mother would do little craft projects and she could sew and make flower arrangements and my father was always fixing it or making it, but nothing in depth or overly creative. It can be difficult when you are the only one. No one to encourage you or understand what you are doing. I encourage my boys whenever I can to be creative - I gave my 5yr old his first canvas recently and he loved it. Yeah...2boys and 4steps. The boys are not so bad - they can be rambunctious from time to time, but they are both good kids - and mamma's boys for sure. The steps - to be honest. I have only been able to meet one of them. The 13yr old (Carrie) lives in Texas and she has been visiting for the summer for the past few weeks. It has gone WAY better than my husband or I imagined it would. She and the boys get along great. Unfortunately the twins live states away. We are hoping that they may be able to come visit next summer.

Dana - I am totally with you on this: "if I do not practice and improve, I am simply wasting it". I took a long break from doing anything creative when I was younger and now that there is this whole new found "buy handmade" movement - I am loving being able to use my creative mind.

Natalie - no problem. The kids really aren't too bad and I am lucky enough to be tied to a phone all day and when there is nothing else going on - I surf the www. It's a perk.

eeks - Ha! I guess I should have clarified that only the 2boys live with us. Between Christmas and July - we are pretty slow at work so, I am able to draw/sketch my moly entries and I am stuck at a desk all day so I am usually surfing the web in between answering the phone.
